Upper East Side

I've been wanting to post a solid Upper East Side "NYC Photos" post for a while. When I decided to cross going to Ladurée off my bucket list, I thought it was the perfect time to photograph the surrounding neighborhood too.

Of all NYC neighborhoods, the Upper East Side does fancy best. There are so many beautiful architectural details to take in, both on and around buildings. And sometimes, being on the Upper East Side feels like being in Europe (or so I imagine). The buildings, compared with the French shops, the tourists or residents speaking foreign languages, and the varied consulates make it all too easy to feel this way.

NY Corners | For a long time, I saw the Upper East Side as "colder" than its west-side sister. There weren't as many families or welcoming eateries, it had seemed to me. But actually, there's a lot to appreciate here, and a lot that I have taken advantage of. There's Carl Shurz Park and Central Park to stroll, The Museum Mile to weave in and out of, ivory-covered houses to admire, and fashionable stores to visit.  

Yoga in the Park

Doing yoga in Bryant Park was on my NYC bucket list for a long time and I was finally able to cross that item off yesterday. Just like with the New York Philharmonic concert in Central Park on Wednesday, the heavy rain managed to hold out and not spoil the fun.

I wasn't sure what to expect from the class, but ultimately had a good time. Pre-registration made it easy to bypass the line and colorful yoga mats were provided free-of-charge. We were very close to each other, but somehow on the lawn in the middle of the City, I was able to find space while moving. I loved looking up at the sky and down at the green green grass. As the evening came to a close, the instructor left us with these words: "You are the sky. Everything else is just the weather." Nice.

Peeking Into Fort Greene

On the other side of the Williamsburgh Savings Bank Tower is an entire neighborhood that surprised me when I went to BAM. From what I could tell, Fort Greene looks like a mix of Park Slope, the downtown Brooklyn area, and Midtown. Its beauty struck me as I visited during the golden hour and returned again in the morning. It might be worth returning to. 

Roosevelt Island

Going to Roosevelt Island, and to Four Freedoms Park especially, has been on my nyc bucket list for some time. I finally managed to make it over via tram this past Sunday. The length of a neighborhood, Roosevelt Island still has plenty to see, like a lighthouse and the remains of a hospital. There's ice cream  to eat on Main Street (I had the banana ice cream with brownie chunks) and parks dotted across the island. I most enjoyed seeing Four Freedoms Park and strolling along the water, breathing in the fresh river breeze. It feels like being somewhere else.

East Village

I finally returned to the East Village to photograph it. I'm not completely happy with how these photos turned out, but I think they give a sense of the place and the history behind it. The buildings suggest a colorful, diverse, and artsy atmosphere (with a touch of grittiness). I've been there for coffee, mac and cheese, and Ukrainian food, and it's definitely worth another visit.  

Holiday Windows at Bergdorf

The streets have been getting a lot more colorful lately, and this past weekend, I decided to celebrate a bit by looking at Bergdorf Goodman's holiday windows. I enjoyed them even more than I did the fall windows because they had more character. This year's theme was The Arts, and there were windows for film, music, dance (with a spinning ballerina), literature, sculpture (with ice), and theater. I admired the level of detail in each window, as well as the bright colors.
