Peeking Into Fort Greene

On the other side of the Williamsburgh Savings Bank Tower is an entire neighborhood that surprised me when I went to BAM. From what I could tell, Fort Greene looks like a mix of Park Slope, the downtown Brooklyn area, and Midtown. Its beauty struck me as I visited during the golden hour and returned again in the morning. It might be worth returning to. 

Red Hook

This past weekend brought an adventure to Red Hook for key lime pie (chocolate-covered, on a stick) and general exploration. I knew in advance that Red Hook had an industrial feel to it, but I was surprised to find it more like a combination of Gowanus and Williamsburg—that is, industrial but also commercial and artsy. I found unexpected art on so many walls, as well as little shops on several streets. The neighborhood also has a pier that reminds me of Bay Ridge's one. Red Hook is home to a few parks and several waterfront views (including what is considered one of the best of the Statue of Liberty). It really isn't just IKEA-land.

Brooklyn Heights

I've shared bits and pieces of Brooklyn Heights in this blog (including some pretty sunset views), but not enough for a "NYC Photos" post, or enough to do the neighborhood justice. It's a very pretty area that's blessed with convenient stores, river views, historically significant places (including a stop on the Underground Railroad), and pretty homes.

NY Corners:
Brooklyn Heights is special to me because it's where I went after my chamber music concert, and it's where I rehearse chamber music now. It's where I celebrated with my co-workers for several consecutive years. It's where I've sometimes run for groceries and books (both chain store and independent). In recent years, it's where I've been coming for a view of the water when I don't want to make a second trip to Manhattan. It's where one of my favorite modern musicians made his debut and final goodbye. It's where I went for a view of some gorgeous fireworks.  

Snow Day

Maybe I shouldn't be surprised that it's snowing so much. After all, as much as I'd like to think that we're quickly approaching spring, it happened last year too. I'm fortunate not to have to go into work today and I greatly appreciate being able to take back some of the weekend. I also appreciate how nice the snow looked when it was fresh yesterday afternoon, and how I can continue enjoy it from my window, with a cup of hot cocoa in hand.

Weekend

This weekend was even better than the last. This one was filled with conversation over a Pink Poodle and a Blue Cow ice cream float at Brooklyn Farmacy in Carroll Gardens. There were also multiple walks along President St. (because it was worth going back to the neighborhood to see more) and a longer but worthwhile trek to the library. In short, this weekend had all the elements that make up a wonderful weekend: little talks, little surprises, new friends and music, some outdoor time, and some needed "me time."

Not pictured: loving the music of Stromae (especially "Formidable"), finding time to read more, finally making (indoor) s'mores, and buying a little journal to start my workday off right.

And, in less than a day, I'll be in Boston. I can't wait. There's much to look forward to when I return, but right now, I'm homeward-bound.

Farmer's Market

For me, the farmer's market is one of New York City's defining elements. It's something to look forward to as the seasons change, and even more so after such a long winter. These photos are from the past weekend's market at Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn (and from the weekend before.) Going there has become part of my Saturday routine, even though I'm almost always there only to look.
